A recent initiative Cultural Heritage under Threat. Challenges and Perspectives, initiated by OREA embedded in the  10th International Conference for the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East (10th ICAANE) from April 25 to April 29 in Vienna lead to the manifestation of the “VIENNA STATEMENT 2016

Due to the recent destruction of antiquities, the idea was developed to involve high-profiled scientists and the leading heads of the antiquities departments. The aim was to not only to deal with the past, but also this urgent and immediate problem leading to vivid discussions already prior to the conference itself, as we scientists followed the current development with grave concerns.

OREA Mission Statement

The Institute for Oriental and European Archaeology (OREA), founded in 2013, covers essential prehistoric and early historical cultural developments from the Orient to Europe. This mission is reflected in the three core regions Europe, Egypt & the Levant, and Aegean & Anatolia. The orient and occident are frequently understood as counterpoints in different worlds and explored separately.
