At the Gates of Armageddon

Matthew J. Adams (W.F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Research)

In the summer of 2018, the Tel Aviv University Megiddo Expedition completed its 14th season over 26 years, under the direction of Israel Finkelstein, Matthew J. Adams, and Mario Martin. During that time, the excavations have had a significant impact on the archaeology and history of the Bronze and Iron Ages. Recent excavations have focused, in part, in areas on the northern side of the tell, where a sequence of impressive monumental gates guarded the entrance to the upper city for at least 1500 years. This lecture will highlight the discoveries of new gates dating to the Middle Bronze and Iron Age 1 periods, as well as discuss the stratigraphic and historical implications of the re-examination of the infamous “Solomonic” gate previously excavated by the University of Chicago in the 1930s.
